Task: The Ailing Planet
Q.1. Read
the following notes carefully:
- Chipko Movement: 1970's
- Chipko: 'embrace': villagers used to hug the trees and protect them from wood cutters
- Aim - protect trees, forests: Gandhi’s peaceful resistance method
- First started in the Chamoli district: 1973
- The Amrita Devi Incident –
- Maharaja ordered his servants to bring wood
- Amrita and other women of the village jumped in front of the trees and hugged them.
- Servants: unable to refuse orders: cut down the tree anyway.
- Amrita Devi died on the spot: last words: “seir santhe runkh raheb, to bhee sastojan” (It is still a small price to pay if at the cost of my head the tree is saved).
- The incident inspired the several other rural women: launched similar movements in different parts of India: 1970’s
Write a report
on the incident in Chamoli mentioning its aftermath. Word limit: approximately

Draw a poster encouraging people to protect the environment before it is too
late.
OR
Draw a poster inviting people to a musical
concert titled ‘Go Green’ to be held on December 16, 2012 in your school. The
proceeds of the event will be gifted to the NGO ‘Yamunotri’ and ‘Kal Ki Aawaz’
in order to further their environment conservation projects.
Q.3. Write
a short note on the Green Movement in India based on the introduction given in
the class by your subject teacher.
